monthly cost = miles ÷ efficiency × price × (1 + charging loss)
  miles            = 1,000
  home rate        = $0.1942/kWh  (80% of charging)
  public DC rate   = $0.4700/kWh  (20%)
  charging loss    = 10%

What is included — and what is not

This is a running-cost comparison: energy and fuel only. Purchase price, finance, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, tax and incentives are all excluded, because mixing them into a monthly fuel figure is how comparisons end up misleading.

Is an EV always cheaper to run?

Almost always on home charging, and it depends on your local electricity price versus petrol. Public fast charging narrows the gap a lot.

What is included in the comparison?

Energy and fuel cost only. Purchase price, insurance, maintenance, depreciation and tax are deliberately excluded.

Why does my state matter so much?

Because residential electricity ranges from about 13c to over 50c per kWh across the US, which swings the answer more than any other input.

How do you handle city versus highway driving?
